If that’s the case, “Peerorum” would be the best answer. “Peerorum” is a one and only extracurricular program unique to our university. As the name suggests, it refers to various programs (such as SM-URP, Sangmyung Tutoring, etc.) that you can do with your peers and make a new leap forward. Shall we figure out together the basic concept of “Peerorum” and what kind of benefits we can gain from it? What is Orum Education and Peerorum? Peerorum basically belongs to Orum education. Orum Education is an education brand of Sangmyung University that develops self-confidence and competency to achieve high dreams. And it consists of three courses:Nabiorum (major curriculum), which is a predictable future education like Navigation, Naraorum (liberal education curriculum), which is an education with a strong foundation based on SM-IN core competency, and Peerorum (extracurricular curriculum), an education that grows with peers. In short, ‘Peerorum’ basically refers to the extracurricular program which is a program-type curriculum that does not grant credits other than major and liberal arts courses, and refers to planned and systematic activities to achieve the educational goals of the university. Its ultimate educational goal is to pursue global citizenship education to practice cooperation and service in preparation for participating in the future society. smu.ac.kr Configuration of Peer Oreum Map Our school is promoting the extracurricular program to students through the ‘Peerorum Map’. The Peerorum Map systematizes the extracurricular programs in the school into 6 areas (learning, language, psychology, career, employment, and start-up) and 43 organized categories. How to apply for the Peerorum? There are two ways to apply for the extracurricular program. The first method is to utilize the integrated information system. Log in to the Saemmul portal system, enter the integrated information system, and click ‘Extracurricular subjects' in the student's main menu to apply for program participation. The second method is to click Apply on the 'Peerorum' webpage. After logging in to the Saemmul portal system, click More (+) for extracurricular programs, and then click the Apply button for a program on the Peerorum web page. Kicker : SM NEWS (DiSAF) SMU Cultural Complex : The First-ever DiSAF SMU Introduces New Platform Do-Hyuk Kim, Reporter ndapple0921@gmail.com Ever-expanding COVID-19 is still with us after two years from its first introduction to the world, making showcasing and savoring art to be much difficult than ever before. The only way to consume art for now is to look up online, or in spaces formed in augmented reality. SMU has always tried their best to provide high quality digital contents, so SMU had to have a blue-sky thinking of forming new place for SMU students to share their artworks and ones who want to enjoy them. What SMU came up with is a ‘DiSAF’, the first of its kind. DiSAF is an entirely new platform for everyone to take a closer look at SMU’s various artists, gathering sixteen culture and art-related departments of SMU in one place. Let me introduce you to the freshly unveiled DiSAF. DiSAF selected its own first topic as ‘Beyond the paradox of connectedness.’ Since this is a hard time withstanding COVID-19, the committee of DiSAF chose the topic which would best represent what students of SMU experienced and artists of SMU would be most likely to depict. Humans consistently cooperate and disintegrate during their interaction, but unexpected appearance of social distancing made connection between individuals riskier than ever. DiSAF rose up from the ground to become a solution, and so it did terrifically. DiSAF embodies hundreds of productions in one single place via online, while collecting four-hundred students of SMU to the uncharted, billions of inhabitants on the internet. To help these tons of anticipated spectators, DiSAF features several kinds of assistance for people who visit the DiSAF page. Each work of art has got a hashtag for classification from eighty-four topics, which include something broad like ‘Design’, ‘Entertainment’, ‘Living’, ‘Craftwork’ to rather unique ‘Photo Journalism’, ‘Sensitivity’, ‘Fabric.’ If visitor clicks each hashtag, related productions can be appreciated without any further actions. This means DiSAF was carefully considered from its development phase and anyone who visit can take a look without a single hassle. I was especially drawn to the hashtag ‘Modern’, since it was the theme which included the second biggest number of artworks and was the topic I was deeply interested in. Hashtag ‘modern’ embodies several different forms of art, ranging from paintwork to forever-unseen unique kind of dance. There are much more interesting artworks designated to different hashtags too, so checking it out would be a brilliant idea. Another way to enjoy DiSAF is to use the ‘Slide-Show’ feature prepared for ease of its use. This cool feature shows the best of the best within hundreds of brilliant works done by SMU students, so picking up great art while time is rushing out has never been so easy. As mentioned earlier before, a total of sixteen art-related majors took part in DiSAF. You can also organize these artworks by major which contributed to producing these various pieces of art. Any expectation you can throw on the online art consuming platform, DiSAF is already prepared from its launch and has got you covered. DiSAF made its hot debut from February 7th, and it was definitely a flying start. The head of the DiSAF organizing committee, the President of SMU Sung-Tae Hong proudly represented DiSAF announcing, “SMU has always committed to be focused on students and education, targeting to raise a talented masters of future society. DiSAF shows how students of SMU endlessly experimented, built and improved their artistic experiences by these wide selections of artworks. I hope to give compliments to SMU and SMU’s students making a bold new step and our future.” Indeed, the launch of DiSAF made a great opportunity for both SMU students and further spectators. Accordingly, students from all departments of Sangmyung University produced a department promotion video for freshmen and transfer students. The department promotion video is perfect information for the untact era, which can provide indirect experiences in college life to freshmen and transfer students. The department promotion video features students from each department to provide specific information about the department. Through this article, I’m going to introduce the department promotion videos that will help freshmen and transfer students with school life. The Department Promotion Video Produced by Enrolled Students, Professors, and Graduates A total of 74 department promotional videos were created with 66 department promotional videos and 8 department promotional videos produced by ambassadors. The department promotion video is meaningful in that enrolled students, professors, and graduates participated in cooperation for freshmen and transfer students who have difficulty to obtain information in non-face-to-face situations. The department promotion videos contain various contents such as department introduction, department curriculum, various club activities in the department, interviews with professors and students, and department prospects. The department promotion videos can be checked on Sangmyung University's official YouTube admission website. Awards for Producing Department Promotion Videos The Department of Historical Contents, which won the 1st prize, produced a video introducing the department and college life with the participation of students and professors, including quizzes conducted with a prize of 1 million won.The Department of Economics and Finance and the Department of Russian Language and Regional Studies Major won the 2nd prize. The Department of Economics and Finance introduced college life such as introduction to departments, atmosphere of departments, and tips for making friends. The Department of Russian Language and Regional Studies Major produced a department promotion video containing interviews with graduates working at Hyundai Motor's Russian subsidiary partner and graduates who entered the Russian National University. In addition, 10 departments won the 3rd prize. There are 10 Departments such as Family Welfare, Education, Game, Fintech, Dance Art, Korean Language and Culture, Space Design Major, Stage Art, Sports Convergence and Software. Lastly, the Department of Nursing Science made a promotion video which is a parody of Squid Game. Effects of Department Promotion Videos A university official said, “With the spread of COVID-19, the promotion video of the department, which the entire department participated in, shows an amateur appearance in the video as it was produced by the enrolled students. However, the information delivered by students is expected to allow freshmen and transfer students to experience practical college life indirectly.” The department promotion videos contain useful information for students who are new to school for the first time, so I hope many students will pay attention. Many students get interested in them, and adore them – the cats are even nicknamed “sang-nyang-I.” However, do you know that theres is a great danger lurking around them? It is a “CAR.” Cats Dying from Cars Every year, many animals die from vehicles. Over the past three years from 2018 to 2021, the number of road kills (based on carcasses) in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do reached 87,581. The number of road kills is increasing every year in both Seoul and Gyeonggi-do, of which cats accounted for the highest portion (73% in Seoul and 65% in Gyeonggi) - Seven out of 10 roadkills in downtown Seoul are cats. This danger also exists within Sangmyung University. Currently, about 20 cats live on Seoul Campus, and one of them had a hit-and-run accident inNovember last year. Fortunately, thanks to “Sangnyangheng,” several cats were able to get necessary surgeries and treatments. Sangnyangheng is a Sangmyung University Seoul Campus club that opened in October last year. Through an interview with Sangnyangheng, we could hear some stories about related safety issues, including the accident and their activities. The interview was conducted in writing with Sangyangheng members. Interview with Sangnyangheng 1. Please introduce Sangnyangheng. Hello! We are Sangnyangheng : Companion for Coexistence with Sangmyung (University) Cats. We are doing various activities for the coexistence of each ecosystem subject within Sangmyung ecosystem including street cats (referred to as “Sang Yang-I”), faculty students & staffs campus members, nearby merchants, and residents. 2. A cat "Yobi" had a hit-and-run accident at school in November last year. I wonder how you found Yobi and took care of it. On November 22th, 2021, we got a report that a street cat was hit by a car at Sangmyung University Seoul Campus. We rushed to the spot and immediately transferred Yobi to the hospital, but it was diagnosed with paraplegia in the hind legs due to spinal fractures and nerve damage. Yobi had a surgery to connect the broken spinal pieces.We decided on surgery and care, and Yobi had a major surgery to connect the broken spinal pieces. However, since the paralysis was caused by nerve damage, Yobi still has a lower body paralysis even after the surgery. Therefore, after being discharged from the hospital, Yobi is now staying in a temporary shelter in loving care from members with rehabilitation treatment for nerve regeneration. We think that we can prevent the death and injury of animals caused by cars by everyone's efforts. Last year, we held a "car bonnet morning knock campaign" to wake cats resting under parked cars before driving. This year, we are planning a "Vehicle slow-down campaign on campus" to make a safe campus for both animals and humans. In addition, we will post contents to provide information about roadkill and improve awareness of it. 6. What are some ways we can do to prevent such accidents? Please make bonnet knocks, slowing down safely, and keeping eyes on the road a part of your life - when you drive cars, motorcycles, and bicycles on campus and in residential areas. These few easy actions can prevent unnecessary sacrifices of street cats who are members of the urban ecosystem. Above all, these actions will protect the safety of both animals and people living together in the city. 7. What are your future plans and goals? The most immediate goal ahead of us is to help Yobi stay healthy and enjoy life in the temporary shelter and eventually find a family that will be with it forever. Moreover, as we said earlier, we will continue to do our job to prevent such accidents and protect the safety of the SangYang-Is. Besides, we are planning various activities such as fun events, goods sales, TNR(Trap-Neuter-Reurn), and creating visual campaigns, so please stay tuned! Ultimately, our biggest goal and plan is to create a friendly (being ‘sangnyang’) campus where all living things can coexist healthily and peacefully. 8. University is not only a place for learning about each other’s major, but also a place that can fulfill students’ urge to know more about themselves and get chances to fill in things that they are short of. *Extracurricular: Not part of the usual school or college course. The motto of Sangmyung’s education is to cultivate* talented people to contribute to culture creation and human welfare. Sangmyung emphasizes five important points in extracurricular programs: Creative, ethical, synthesizing, respectful, and disciplinary mind. Through these aspects, Sangmyung pinpoints into three strategies of concentrating on every single student, expanding the range of extracurricular programs linking with the subjects, and advancing the programs. *Cultivate: to try to develop and improve something. *Disciplinary: Connected with the punishment of people who break the rules. Sangmyung offers systemized programs that do not offer credits and that achieve the motto of the school. Educational gathering, educational education, educational competition, educational consulting, and educational category test are five types of extracurricular programs. As a student who has experienced educational gathering, English speaking tutoring, before Corona, I got the feeling that it was very helpful of enhancing my fluency in English. When we are attending classes, it is hard to get a chance to speak and share ideas in English even though my major is English. However, English speaking tutoring helped me to use English with less pressure. Sharing ideas of social issues in English was both interesting and helpful. It is true that many students do not usually care much about programs that schools launch, possibly thinking that it is not related to them. Kicker: SM NEWS The 2021 Liberal Arts and Personality Day By Sol-Hyang Park, Editor-in-chief cookie7152@naver.com Sangmyung University held "Liberal Arts and Personality Day" from November 22nd to December 3rd to share the achievements gained through the liberal arts curriculum, Liberal Arts and Personality class. The event held by the Gyedang Cultural Education Center, was opened both offline and online. The offline event was held from 10am to 5pm on the first basement floor of the Seoul Campus “Miraebaeknyeon” Hall. Sangmyung University's Liberal Arts and Personality curriculum aims to help new students adapt to the school. It is a curriculum conducted by a small group consisting of professors and students through conversations and discussions on academic, life, and values while forming intimate and personal relationships.The curriculum consists of the following topic : " -maeumsaegim- " to understand and know more about universities, " -maeumchaenggim- " to improve school adaptability and self-understanding through psychological tests, " -maeumnanum- " to learn lessons through lectures by celebrities, and " -maeumeodeum- " to promote cultural literacy through culture and arts. This offline event shared what was obtained through this mind project in brochures and photos. It also displayed reviews of Liberal Arts and Personality classes. Snacks were provided to 50 first-comers everyday, and an event that took polaroid pictures with Sumungi (Sangmyung University’s mascot- ) was also held. In particular, the "One Book, One Sangmyung" event is an annual event. Students vote for the books to be recommended, and the selected one will be reflected as a must-read book in the Liberal Arts and Personality class for freshmen in 2022. This year, "The Stranger" was the must-read book and last year was “Demian.” In the case of offline events, there were many students participating, and the atmosphere was very lively due to the various events mentioned. It seemed to give and receive good influences between students. I hope there will be more events for students to participate in and appreciate in person in the future.

Graduation exhibitions are indispensable for these majors, but offline exhibitions had been briefly dampened by COVID-19. However, they are being actively held this year. Among them, I will cover the graduation exhibition of students from the Department of Fine Arts. The 54th Graduation Exhibition of the Department of Fine Arts The 54th graduation exhibition of the Department of Fine Arts at Sangmyung University College of Culture and Arts was opened at the gallery “Wolhae” on the first basement floor of “Miraebaeknyeon”Hall of Sangmyung University Seoul Campus. The graduation exhibition was held from November 22nd to December 3rd. The exhibition was held at not only at the gallery, but also at Space Zero, an art museum. The theme of the exhibition is 'heating', which means the passion that students feel while producing their works. Seventeen prospective graduates participated in the exhibition, and their Korean paintings, Western paintings, and sculpture works were on display. The history of the Fine Arts major which held its 54th graduation exhibition this year is very deep. Since the opening of the department in 1965, it has produced numerous artists, sculptors, and installation art artists, and they have actively participated in Korean works of art and on the world stage. The department has had many difficulties in students' studies, production of works, and guidance from professors due to the restrictions of activities caused by COVID-19. However, they organized the exhibition of works of prospective artists who overcame difficult times with their passion for art. Exhibitions that Revitalize the University Like this, in contrast to last year where the exhibition schedule was almost canceled due to COVID-19, a series of exhibitions by design and art departments are energizing the university. Lee Sang-eun, a professor at the Department of Fine Arts, said, "I am proud of the students who overcame difficult times with passion and sublimated them into wonderful works. I hope many people will appreciate the works and encourage students." In addition to this graduation exhibition, assignments and graduation exhibitions of students majoring in design universities have also been held. Starting in May, 324 works of each major project of the departments of Design and Arts were exhibited at Sangmyung Gallery in the Design Hall. Kicker: SM NEWS Sangmyung University’s Newly Reorganized Homepage Intro By Sol-Hyang Park, Editor-in-chief cookie7152@naver.com The website of Sangmyung University's admissions office has been reorganized under the new concept of "Sangwat."Since the national entrance exam for university ended on November 18th, students who are about to apply for the university through the exam are expected to visit the university's website more frequently. Accordingly, Sangmyung University reorganized the intro page to make it easier and more interesting to access the information they wanted. New Homepage Reminding Us of Harry Potter The reorganized intro page is the work of Park Sun-min, a sophomore majoring in animation in the SW Convergence Department of Convergence Engineering. Under the motto of "University that Communicates with Students," the homepage attracts attention by expressing Sangmyung University's various fields of study as game characters which remind us of professors in Hogwarts of Harry Potter. There are game characters of Hong Sung-tae, the head of the Admissions Department, and other 10 college principals dressed in medieval costumes. The president and the head of the admissions office characters are welcoming students at the center of the page. Furthermore, the principal of Culture and Arts holds a large art brush, and the principal of Education holds a book in one hand and a baton in another hand, just like they are teaching students. If you move your mouse over these characters, the names of each character and the field they are in charge of will be introduced. If you click them, the email will be copied to the clipboard, and you can send questions about entering that department by e-mail and receive answers directly. Student Park Sun-min, who worked on the illustration of the intro page, said, "I worked hard with the hope that those who visit the website would be interested in our university." This special intro page will be operated during the recruitment of new students for 2022. The page is also gaining great popularity and attention on the Internet, and was found in other university communities or SNS, and articles. I didn't have a smart phone as well as a cell phone. So when I drew imaginary paintings on Science Day, I always imagined myself taking classes at home on my tablet. What about you? Have you ever imagined a future like this? In fact, at that time, I didn't really want to be able to have an untact lecture, but I just vaguely thought that there might be a future like this. How about comparing this imagination to now? It's not about the future anymore. Now, it has become a very natural appearance of today. In fact, this imagination was only for a young child who knew nothing about education. I mean a little kid who didn't want to get up early in the morning and go to school. It was inevitable due to COVID-19, but now the children are taking school classes on tablets at their homes. Educationally, this is very unfortunate. We are facing several crises with untact lectures. The first is the lack of direct experience. In the school field, we can experience many things. Just thinking about our school days, we did various experiments in the science room and experienced ecology through field trips. On the other hand, all experiences in untact lectures are inevitably indirect and limited. Of course, untact lectures have the advantage of having no time and space restrictions. However, experience through virtual reality is inevitably inferior to direct experience. The second is that it is difficult for children to learn the value of the community. After the untact lecture, the stress of many middle and high school students decreased compared to offline lectures. Since they don't go to school, the stress they had at school was reduced. But if the stress at school is solved by not going to school, can it be seen as a real solution? Various conflicts arise in the school field, such as relationships with friends, relationships with teachers, and class problems. It's probably too natural in a space where people are together. In the process of resolving conflicts, children can learn to treat people and understand community life. It is impossible in untact lectures where only indirect communication is possible. The last one is disconnection from society. Children who don't learn to be considerate of others and don't understand community life will gradually get used to this situation. Children who only think about themselves, are comfortable working alone, and are accustomed to handling everything untact. In the end, this society will be bound to be cut off. COVID-19 seems to have caused these educational problems, but in fact, this is the chronic problem of our 'Korean education' intensified due to COVID-19. At this rate, even if COVID-19 stabilizes and we can live a normal life, there is a high possibility that the aforementioned problems will not be solved. So what should we do? It's time to think about it together. Perhaps the answer can be found in communication. School is a space where children learn various values of life and establish their own values. But when we think of the school education we went through, we can see that this is not the case. Rather, our school education is encouraging competition among children. Now this society is no different from games where only winners can survive. In fact, the logic of a capitalist society is frighteningly simple. It's hard for individuals to change their social structure. To survive, we have no choice but to compete with others. It's a very unfortunate thing. However, it is not right for school education to stand by and even encourage children's competition. The more that happens, the more schools should teach children how to understand, care for, and live together. Now children should be able to think for themselves. Why do we humans live? Why do we live in a society where we have no choice but to compete? Is this the right competition? What can we do for a fair society where everyone can be happy? What should I do? We should stop injecting the value of vested interests into children and help them have a world they dream of on their own. A small bird breaks an egg and comes out. I hope our children, adults, Korean education, and Korean society can now break through eggs to build a better education system/society.

Kicker: SM NEWS Prof. Denny’s Lifelong Education Class By Sol-Hyang Park, Editor-in-chief cookie7152@naver.com Sangmyung University's Lifelong Education Center has been providing lifelong education for community residents who live near our university. In particular, Professor Samuel Alexander Denny, Jr's Lifelong English Education class has been steadily conducted face-to-face for over 10 years, even in the midst of the Corona Pandemic. Thankfully to the professor and students, I attended this class for a while and was able to cover the scene. I briefly attended a class starting at 10 a.m. in M112 and conducted interviews. The class usually runs twice a week from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., and on that day, there were about seven students in their 40-50s. Before the class began, they exchanged cookies and other snacks as if they were used to it. They also had small conversations with the professor about how they have been doing or Netflix dramas. In the atmosphere full of laughter, the class was held. The class started with full of joy and laughter. As they studied an English book and articles, they took notes themselves and did not hesitate to ask questions and answer in English. They continued natural English conversations based on the contents of the class. During the break in the middle of class, I was able to interview Professor Samuel Denny and some of the students. Interview with Prof. Denny 1. How long have you been running this class? - It has been well over 10 years. I’ve been studying with these class members for such a long time, and that’s why this class is like my Korean family, not just a regular class. 2. What kind of contents do you usually teach? - Firstly, we study based on the book “Chicken Soup for the Soul”, which is a famous self-help book. After the break, we study news articles from the Korea Times, or New York Times, etc. I try to select articles that are related to the students’ lives such as about traveling, food, health, etc. It’s because we’re here to share our stories, learn about each other, and improve our life quality. Are there any moments when you feel rewarded or proud while doing lifelong education? - Every class I feel this way. I love this class so much. The students give me a lot of support and encouragement in my life in Korea. I believe teaching is a two-way street. Teachers give a lot, and students give back a lot. For me, this class is a wonderful example. I get so much back from my students, and I’m always super proud of them. 4. What is the big difference between the lifelong education class and the general classes you teach with university students? - In classes with university students, we inevitably feel pressure of time and tests. Whereas, in this class, we don’t have to worry about them. If we want, we can have deeper discussions, spending more time. In some ways, I feel more freedom to be able to discuss the issues more deeply. 5. Please tell us what you think the importance of lifelong education. - As we age, we need to exercise our mind to stay mentally active. For example, learning a foreign language is good for brain health, and preventing diseases like Alzheimer’s or dementia. Like this learning keeps motivating us, and it should never end. Furthermore, considering the aging society in Korea, lifelong education will be more needed and expanded not just for learning English but in fields like art, music etc. Interview with Students Thankfully, I could interview two students of the class. I gathered two answers for the same questions. 1. How did you come to take this class? - I came here with the introduction of my friend. / I took several classes at other educational & cultural centers, and I settled in this class because I like the professors so much, especially Prof. Denny. 2. What are you satisfied with about this class? - Since we are old, it is difficult to speak in English with friends at the right level. However, it is good to freely meet friends of the right level and talk in English here. The professor is also wonderful, so I am very grateful for the class. / Through the book, we can learn many expressions for daily conversations. Also, we can study hot topics about current issues that fit our level. The materials are very helpful in many ways. 3. Is there anything you want more from Sangmyung University’s lifelong education classes? - I’m satisfied enough, but I want to improve my English skills and have classes with a higher level in the future. / Since there is a high demand for the humanities, I hope there will be more diverse humanities classes offered. For example, it would be nice to learn history in English. The Professors and students in this class have enjoyed special days by singing carols on Christmas or having Halloween parties etc. They also said they often have lunch together. Through this class, they have been communicating with a strong bond. The professor and students have been steadily connected for a long time. Like the professor said, such lifelong education will become more important in the future. I hope lifelong education will become more diverse so that more elderly people can feel the joy of learning and stay mentally healthy. Once again, I would like to express my gratitude to those who allowed me to attend the class and have interviews.
